Mike
and Bob Bryan capped off a great 2002 campaign by advancing
to the semi finals of the Masters Series Event in Madrid
and then going on the next week to capture their 5th title
of the year in Basel.
During the Fall Indoor Season in Europe the twin brothers
beat Mark Knowles-Daniel Nestor, Andy Roddick-Fernando Gonzalez,
Rick Leach-Brian MacPhie, and Jared Palmer-DavidAdams.
The Bros. finished off the year as the #3 ranking team and
a 54-19 record, with four solid wins over the #1 team in the
world, Knowles-Nestor. Mike and Bob defeated this Bahamian-Canadian
combo in the finals of Scottsdale, Toronto and Basel.
With five titles, the Bryans established a new record for
doubles championships by brothers in one year, breaking the
record they established last year with four. They are
one title away from tying the Tim and Tom Gullikson's Record
of 10 Titles by brothers.
They did well in Grand Slams reaching the semi finals of Wimbledon
and the U.S.Open, and the quarters of the Australian and French
Opens. A huge highlight of the year was Mike winning
the US Open Mixed Doubles with Lisa Raymond, beating Bob and
Katarina Srebotnik in the final, 7-6, 7-6. The Bros.
did well in all four Grand Slam Mixed.
Mike played four extra tournaments with other partners and
had 13 additional wins for an overall record of 67-21.
He won two extra titles, at Nottingham with Knowles and at
Long Island with Mahesh Bhupathi. His career total is
now 11, while Bob has 9, all with Mike.
Mike and Bob also enjoyed doing exhibitions, clinics, Bryan
Bros. Band gigs and fund raisers for the following
organizations during the year: WECANN, benefiting abused
and neglected children; Children Uniting Nations, an international
foster care program; the Elton John Aids Foundation; The Tim
& Tom Gullikson Foundation; St. Jude's Hospital; the Washington
Tennis & Education Foundation; the Santa Barbara
Tennis Patrons; the UCSB Tennis Teams; the Cal Poly, San Luis
Obispo Teams; and Smiley High School.

Barnard-Thomas, and Pala-Vizner.
At the US Open the guys went nuts and won a total of 13 matches!
When the smoke had cleared Mike had captured his first Grand
Slam Title, the Mixed Doubles with his good friend Lisa Raymond.
This twosome beat Bob and his partner, Katarina Srebotnik
of Slovenia, in a beautiful, 7-6, 7-6, match on CBS on Friday
morning. Mike & Lisa did not drop a set and beat
tough tandems and former Grand Slam Mixed Champs like Don
Johnson-Kim Po, Wayne & Cara Black, and Justin Gimelstob-Corina
Morariu.
In the Men's Doubles, Mike and Bob reached their third Grand
Slam Semi Final. They beat the current French Open Champs,
Paul Haarhuis-Yevgeny Kafelnikov, in the third round, and
current Australian Open Winners, Mark Knowles-Daniel Nestor
in the quarters. They lost in the semis to Bhupathi-Max
Mirnyi, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.
21 wins and 5 losses over the past month. Not bad.
Now they rest up for a couple of weeks and then head to Europe
for the indoor season: Vienna, Madrid, Basel, and Paris, and
then the World Doubles Championships

these past three weeks have been scorching for the Bros. Try
this on for size: winning their first Masters Series Title

the finals of Washington D.C.

BRYAN BROS. HEATING UP THE
SUMMER SEASON
08.7.2002
Mike & Bob are on a roll this Summer . . . . .
Prior to Wimbledon at Queens, Mike beat three good players
to Q and then went on to beat Cedric Pioline in the main draw
before losing to Gambill. At Nottingham, Mike combined up
with Mark Knowles to win the title and again qualified for
the singles.
At Wimbledon the brothers again reached the doubles semi finals
before losing to #1 seeds Mark Knowles-Daniel Nestor, 7-6,
7-6, 7-6. In Mixed, Bob reached the quarters with Katarina
Srebotnik, while Mike advanced to the third round with Leizel
Horn Huber. Bob also had a good run in the Qs for Wimby losing
in the final round after a good win over David Prinosil in
the second round.
They continued their winning ways on the grass at Newport.
Their second straight title there marked the first time in
the 100 year history of that venerable tournament that a team
had won it twice in succession. The guys also did a two series
of exhibitions and clinics for the Tim & Tom Gullikson
Foundation and also for Ryan Macaulay and adidas. Other players
in this special event included Rod Laver, Stan Smith, Stefan
Edberg, and Jan Michael Gambill.
Returning home to LA they reached the semis and then it was
on to Toronto. The Bros. were tired and briefly considered
staying at home for another week, but it was good that they
kept it going as they went on to win their first Masters Series
Title with a very tough five match win streak to the championship.
Listen to this.
In a five day run they beat Keonig-Kratzman, Schalken-Boutter,
Rikl-Prinosil, Johnson-Palmer, and the #1 team in the world,
Knowles-Nestor. Almost all the matches went three sets and
involved tie breakers, and they won 5 of their 7 T.B.s for
the week.
As we go to press, they are playing Cincy and then theyll
go on to Washington DC and Long Island before the US Open.
What a Summer!

BRYAN BROS PLAY WIMBLEDON
SEMI-FINALS
BROS
HAVE GOOD RUN DURING
THE EUROPEAN SEASON
07.08.2002
Mike & Bob lost in the semis of the Wimbledon Doubles
to Mark Knowles-Daniel Nestor by the oh-so-close score of
7-6, 7-6, 7-6. Knowles and Nestor are a great team and a class
act and we wish them well in the finals
The
Bryan Brothers have had some fine results during the arduous
nine week European Spring Campaign. Highlights have included
Bob qualifying for St. Polten, with Mike reaching the doubles
final with Mike Hill.
On the red clay at the French, the twins reached the quarter
finals of the Mens Doubles, with an incredible and exciting
come-from-behind-win against the tough tandem of David Rikl
of the Czech Republic and David Prinosil of Germany in the
third round. Down 5-1 in the third and 0-40, the guys staged
a miraculous rally and had the crowd going nuts winning the
last six games in a row to take the match, 6-3, 1-6, 7-5.
It was the third time the Bryans have reached the quarters
of a Grand Slam Mens Doubles.
In the Mixed, Bob and his partner Katarina Srebotnik of Slovenia,
battled their way to the semi finals with a great first round
win over former many-time Grand Slam Doubles Champs Todd Woodbridge-Rennae
Stubbs. It was the fifth time Bob has reached the quarters
of a Grand Slam Mixed.
On the beautiful grass at Queens, Mike qualified with three
very fine wins and then in the first round on Centre Court
and on the BBC, Mike defeated highly regarded Cedric Pioline
of France, 6-4, 6-4. Pioline is a former Wimbledon and US
Open Finalist. Mike played just great and it was the best
win of his career for sure.
Mike continued his roll at Nottingham and qualified for the
second straight week, before losing to Nicolas Kiefer of Germany
in a good match. But Mike had a stellar week in doubles winning
the championship with Mark Knowles! In the finals they defeated
the Worlds #1 Team Don Johnson-Jared Palmer, 0-6, 7-6
(3), 6-4.
The win was Mikes 7th Doubles Title and he was happy
that the match moved Knowles to #1 in the world for the first
time in his career. Mike had a blast playing with Mark and
learned lots from him. Mark was very nice in his Newspaper
quotes about Mike saying, "It was my first time with
Mike, but it was tremendous. I knew it would be a lot of fun,
I knew he was a great player, but it even exceeded what I
expected. I look forward to playing with him in the future."
Bob played the Wimbledon Qualies at Roehampton and got to
the final round with a great second round win over David Prinosil
of Germany, 7-6, 6-3. Coach Craig Edwards reported that Bob
served huge and played big grass court tennis.
Mike and Bob are seeded #6 in the doubles and hope to get
a roll going at Wimbledon this week. Bob is playing Mixed
again with Katarina Srebotnik, while Mike will join up with
Liezel Horn Huber. Last year the Bros. Advanced to the semis
of the doubles, while Mike-Huber were finalists in the Mixed.

Rikl and Martin Damm from the Czech Republic, 6-1, 3-6, 10-2

and we hang with them and practice with them so much.

were finalists at Adelaide and Memphis, and quarterfinalists
at the Australian Open.
It is the ninth final they have advanced to in their three
and a half year pro tennis career. Last year the Bryans won

the semi finals of Wimbledon.
The Bryans are 15-4 on the year and will move up to the #3
spot in the world on Monday.
Next week the brothers will play in Scottsdale, then they
will play Indian Wells, and Key Biscayne.

Mike
and Bob had a fun and successful week in Memphis at the Kroger-St.
Jude Tournament at the beautiful Racquet Club of Memphis.
They were finalists in the doubles, losing to Brian MacPhie
of San Jose and Nenad Zimonjic of Yugoslavia, 6-3, 3-6, 10-4
in the Super Tie Breaker.
Along
the way they had some good wins including, Mardy Fish-Jeff
Morrison, 6-2, 6-3; Xavier Malisse-Sargis Sargsian, 6-3, 6-7,
10-4; and Andy Roddick-Jan-Michael Gambill, by the exact same
score of 6-3, 6-7, 10-4. Bob also had a good singles win over
tough Chris Woodruff in the qualie, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.
On
the Sunday before the tournament began, the Bryans did an
exhibition and KIDS DAY Clinic for 1000 youngsters on the
Stadium Court that was headed up by their Pop, Wayne. During
that event the brothers donated $4000 to the St. Jude Hospital.
This world famous Memphis hospital works to aid children with
life threatening diseases.
On
Tuesday they joined with Todd Martin, Jeff Morrison, and Alexandra
Stevenson in a race to put food in shopping carts at a local
Kroger Store to aid the World Food Bank. Some $5000 worth
of food was given to needy families by their efforts.
The
guys also had lots of fun each night playing music with their
pals Andre Sa and Glenn Weiner. The guys also enjoyed driving
their comp Mercedes Kompressor and having an honorary parking
spot because they won the event last year.
The
Bryans ranking has climbed from #7 up to #4 as a team.
Now
the guys are off to Acapulco, Scottsdale, Indian Wells and
Key Biscayne.
THE BRYAN BROS. HAVE A GOOD JANUARY IN AUSTRALIA & INDIA
01.2002
Mike and Bob started 2002 off right with a
total record of 13-7 during their month stay in beautiful
and sunny Australia. They saw their Team Doubles Ranking climb
up to #6 and their individual doubles ranking reach #19, Bob,
and #20, Mike.
In
the first event in Adelaide, the twins reached the finals
and along the way they beat #2 seeds Todd Woodbridge and Scheng
Schalken and #3 seeds Sandon Stolle and Josh Eagle. The next
week, Mike played in Sydney with David Rikl, while Bob was
playing the Qs in Melbourne. The first time team of Rikl-Bryan
had a fine tournament and advanced to the semi finals.
At the Aussie Open, the Bryan brothers reached the fourth
round of the doubles. It was the third time that Mike and
Bob had advanced to the quarter finals of a Slam. Their wins
included Jan-Michael Gambill-James Blake, 6-3, 6-3 and the
seventh seeded team of Petr Pala-Pavel Vizner of the Czech
Republic, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.
In Mixed, Mike played with Lisa Raymond and they reached the
round of sixteen, while Bob and Katrina Srebotnik made it
to the quarter finals before losing to eventual winners Kevin
Ullyett-Daniela Hantuchova. It was the fourth time Bob had
reached the quarters of a Slam Mixed. Both Mike and Bob lost
in close matches here, 7-6 in the third set Super Tie Breakers.
The Bryans then went on to compete at the World Doubles Championships
in Bangalore, India. The WDC was a special event featuring
eight of the top teams in the world from 2001, including Don
Johnson-Jared Palmer, Mahesh Bhupathi-Leander Paes, Ricky
Leach-Ellis Ferreira, Pala-Vizner, Mark Knowles-Brian MacPhie,
Robbie Koenig- John-Laffnie de Jager, and Tom Vanhoudt-Chris
Haggard. There were two flights of round robin with the top
two teams going into a semi final elimination draw.
Mike and Bob beat Ferreira-Leach in the first round, lost
to Johnson-Palmer in the second and beat Vanhoudt-Haggard,
6-3, 6-2 in the final round. They just missed getting into
the semi finals on a disheartening and oh-so-close ruling
that left them out when a three way tie resulted in their
flight.
