Bryans Win 4th BNP Paribas Masters Trophy

Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan captured their 102nd tour title on Sunday at the Paris Master Series Event as they defeated Marcin Matkowski of Poland and Austrian Jurgen Melzer 7-6(5), 5-7, 10-6 in the final.  It is the Bryans’ 32nd Masters 1000 in their 50th final.

The Bryans, who have already secured the year-end #1 spot in the ATP Doubles Rankings, now go to the World Tour Finals looking to win their 10th title of the season.  The season finale begins in London at The O2 on Sunday, 9 November.

"We're very happy to win Paris again, especially since we had to beat four quality teams along the way," said Mike. "We hope to keep our level high going into the last tournament of the season."

"It was a hard fought match and we were fortunate to hit some good shots late in the breakers," said Bob Bryan. "Hats off to Jurgen and Marcin on a great run this week."

Victory for the Bryans added to their titles at the US Open, the Masters 1000s in Indian Wells, Miami, Monte-Carlo, Cincinnati and Shanghai and other tour events at Delray Beach and Houston.  They are the first players, in singles or doubles, to win six ATP World Tour Masters 1000 titles in a season.

The California natives have lifted the Paris trophy four times, previously triumphing in 2005, 2007 and 2013.  Thanks to AFP/Getty Images for the photos and to the ATPWorldTour.com website for this article that has been shortened and excerptedThanks also to Paul MacPherson of the ATP for his gracious help.

***  I am so saddened and heartbroken to tell you that our friend Steve Jones passed away last Wednesday afternoon:  He was in no pain and his wonderful son Davey and longtime sweetheart Dana were with him.  Steve was one of a kind.  So personable.  A Type A hard worker and striver.  Great athlete - - - scratch golfer, A+ tennis player, relentless jogger, and vicious croquet player.  Real Estate maestro who knew the art of the deal.  Great people skills.  He was generous and kind and caring.  He was fun and he was funny.  We have great memories of Steve and Steve Jones stories.  He was a great supporter to me, the Cabrillo Racquet Club, Mike ‘n Bob, and the band.  I learned lots from him and he was a friend for 42 years.  In all that time, I think he paid for every single meal we ever had together - - - and we had lots of them.  I admired the way he bravely battled cancer for the past few years.  John and I enjoyed our time with him last Saturday at his home in Palm Desert and were amazed when he somehow had the strength, with the aid of Davey and his walker, to escort us out to our car for our final goodbye.  After sharing our last words, I gave him a long and hard salute like he had given me so many times in the past.  Was Steve perfect?  Nah.  Far from it.  Like all of us, he had his ups and his downs and his foibles and character flaws.  But at his best, he was a powerful force for good . . . He was one of a kind and he will be missed . . .

***  Mike and Bob dedicated their Paris Title to Steve:  Steve was behind Mike and Bob since Jump Street and was there on the day they were born.  As they became pretty good juniors in the 10s and 12s and 14s, he played them often and graciously always let them win - - - without them knowing it.  He was always so happy when they won big titles in the juniors or in college or in the pros and he was always the first to call or write congrats.

***  Mike and Bob wrote to him a few days before he passed away:  “You and Davey have been with us since day one and our fondest memories are from our times spent with you at CRC, at the Newsweek, hanging at the Forum, all those college matches, at the Cooperage, or just those fun days playing around at the local pizza joints.  We wouldn't be the people we are today without the love and guidance you gave us as youngsters.  I'll never forget the day we saw Agassi for the first time and when you bought us all those pink and black Agassi shoes.  I think we cleaned them every night with a wet rag for a year!  No one has supported us more and we'll never forget that.  You and Davey will always be family to us, we love you, and we are both here for you, thinking of you, and are praying for you.”
