Sports Illustrated for Kids, December 1991, "No Match for These Brothers"

"Identical-twin tennis players Mike and Bob Bryan of Camarillo, California, have one rule they’ve never broken: ‘We won’t play each other in a final,’ Says Bob. Instead, the 13-year-old twins take turns losing to each other by default. . . . . . "

"In their age group in Southern California, Bob is ranked first and Mike is ranked third. In the past six years, they have defaulted about 15 tournament finals to each other.!"

"The boys’ rule was first suggested to them by their parents, who are also their coaches. ‘We don’t want them to go through each other to reach their goals’, says Mrs. Bryan.

"The only time the boys do play together in a final is when they’re on the same doubles team. They recently won the national clay court title for boys age 14 and under (in Ft. Lauderdale).

"’We think the same,’ says Mike. ‘If a lob goes up, we both know who’s going to take it!’"
