"Doubling Their Fun . . . . . On the Tour; Tennis: Schedule is Demanding, but Bryan Twins Enjoying Life as Professionals"

"Camarillo natives Mike and Bob Bryan got a taste of "big time" tennis when they advanced to the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open in September."

"That taste left the 22-year-old twin brothers with a craving for more success."

"’Our goal is to be in the top 10 in the doubles rankings next year, make the Davis Cup Team and win a couple of titles,’ Mike Bryan said during a recent visit home."

"The Bryans don’t have very far to go. They are currently ranked No. 19 in the world and are only second to Jared Palmer and Alex O’Brien on the U.S. Davis Cup doubles list."

"Their biggest tour win came against the No. 1-ranked team of Mark Woodforde and Tood Woodbridge, also known as "the Woodies," in the San Jose Sybase Tournament in February."

"’We tuned them up. Took them out 6-2, 6-3. It was great because we saw that we could beat the best team in the world handily when we play our best,’ said Mike."

"The key now is consistency. The Bryans have used the last two years on the pro tour to get their feet wet and learn the ropes , according to Mike."

"’ . . . . . On the road we hit twice a day, go to the gym, eat and sleep,’ said Mike. ‘It can get exhausting. We try to relax by watching some television at the hotel or playing music."

"One outside interest they have been able to incorporate into life on the road is their passion for music. Mike, a drummer and Bob, who plays keyboard, often display their musical abilities at player parties. The brothers developed a love for music from their father Wayne."

"’We are huge Dave Matthews fans,’ Mike said. ‘We are trying to learn a couple of his songs while we are on the road.’"

"Growing up they didn’t own a television. Their parents felt that it was eating up too much time, so every free minute away from the books or the court was spent playing songs."

" . . . . . Mike and Bob arrived at Stanford and immediately loved the team and lifestyle. Surrounded by top students and athletes, the boys developed bonds with many amazing individuals. One of those individuals was first-daughter and fellow Cardinal Chelsea Clinton."

"’Chelsea is really nice and down to earth. Of course, she had to act perfect in public and not say any bad words.’, said Mike"
"The Bryans even had a chance to spend a weekend in an Aspen cabin with Clinton and a few other friends."

"’I felt so safe in that cabin. You would look outside and see the Secret Service hanging from trees and stuff. If you wanted to go hiking, they (Secret Service) would have to go a day before and check it out, ‘ added Mike."

"Mike recalled picking up the phone and it was some guy named Bill looking for Chelsea."

"’That was weird, I mean this was the president that I was talking to. . . . . (The brothers would visit the White House and had lunch with Chelsea and her parents in the Summer of 1998, while playing the Washington DC Event.)
