Star Free Press, Rhiannon Potkey, July 30, 2001:
"Bryans Bring Out Their Best for L.A.; Mercedes-Benz Cup: Camarillo Twins Win Tournament The Have Coveted for so Long."

"Los Angeles - - - As Jan-Michael Gambill’s return sailed past the baseline, Mike and Bob pumped their fist, let out a victory cry and showed the vertical leap that has helped them hit so many overhead winners"

"On Saturday, in front of (what Tournament Director Bob Kramer) called the largest crowd to witness a doubles match (in the history of the tournament), the Bryans defeated Andy Roddick and Gambill 7-5, 7-6 (8-6) to win their fourth championship of the year."

"’This is the sweetest tournament win,’ said Mike. ‘It’s cool to do it in front of everyone we know. They haven’t seen us play at this level before.’"

"The Bryans, who had never won a doubles match in this tournament prior to this year, opened the match by breaking Roddick in a game that lasted 14 points . . . . ."

" . . . . . ‘They hit some good shots in the breaker to come back.’ said Bob. ‘Mike just relaxed and hit a good return. Ourknowledge of doubles is a little greater than theirs since we have been playing since age 6. Going into the match, we knew if we could return their strong serves and get in some rallies that our doubles strategies would come into play."

"The victory marks the third championship the Bryans have won in four tournaments. They captured titles at London/Queen’s Club on June 11 and Newport on July 9. In between, they reached the semifinals of Wimbledon. They extended their doubles record since that time to 17-1. The Bryans are expected to move up into the top four in the ATP World Doubles Championships when today’s standings are released."

"’We have so much confidence now and it sems like everything is going right,’ said Mike. "It feels like all the breakers will go our way. I think we are handling the pressure better because we have been in those situations before.’"
