BRYAN-HORN REACH THE FINALS OF THE WIMBLEDON MIXED
07.2001
Mike Bryan and
Liezel Horn Huber, in their first tournament together battled their
way to the finals of the Wimbledon Mixed doubles. Mike and his South
African partner lost in the finals in a close three set match, but
they had five great wins in advancing to the Championship Match.
In the first round they out edged the Swedish tandem of Landsberg-Carlsson,
6-7, 6-3, 9-7. They had an easier time in next match, out playing
Arnold-Suarez of Argentina, 6-4, 6-2.
They had to go to a very extended match late into the evening to
turn back the German duo of Braasch-Rittner, 7-6, 3-6, 13-11. Then
Bryan-Huber got hot and smoked two highly seeded teams: Ferreira-Sugiyama,
6-3, 6-2 and Bhupathi-Likhovtseva, 6-2, 6-2. In the finals, Mike
and Liezel lost to Friedl-Hantuchova, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. What a run!
